CDL Thd-VKM: Flow Calculation for Pipe Junctions

Project: Research project

Project Details

Modelling the flow in pipe junctions plays an important part in calculating the gas exchange in one-dimensional simulation programs. The flow equation that usually was applied for this modelling relies on empirically determined flow coefficients, and has several shortcomings.

An alternative model for calculating the flow in pipe junctions is presented, which is based on the conservation laws for mass, momentum and energy, and does not require any empirical data. Results are compared with measurements and 3 D simulations.

The work was carried out at the Institute for Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Graz, Chair Prof. Rudolf Pischinger, within the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Combustion Engine Thermodynamics, in collaboration with the company AVL List GmbH Graz.
