Description

The term »virtual engine« implies a complete simulation of all engine processes with the aim of revealing further optimization potentials. This applies particularly to the reduction of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The CD Lab for Thermodynamics of the Internal Combustion Engine aims at the implementation of this vision. The emphasis of its activities is therefore on the simulation of engine processes. Models are developed for the simulation of combustion, heat transfer and pollutant formation. For example, a zero-dimensional calculation model has been successfully developed for the simulation of the heat release rate and the NOx formation in diesel engines. Furthermore a quasi-dimensional model for the description of the wall heat transfer in the combustion chamber as well as a model for the simulation of the thermal behavior of IC engines are also being developed. Within this model the engine structure is represented as a thermal network. The coupling of the model with programmes for the simulation of the engine cycle and the whole drive-train allows the optimization of the thermal management in vehicles. The verification of simulation models represents an integral part of the model development process in our Laboratory. For this purpose measurements of various test engines are carried out. In addition it includes the further development of suitable analysis methods, as for example optical combustion diagnostics or heat flux measuring techniques.
