Description

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy can be used to study biotransformations in situ, in vivo and in aqua (1H2O). It provides solution structural information of mixtures of compounds that are metabolised or produced during enzymic reactions and culture fermentations. The samples do not require costly prior processing for analyses. Assessments of metabolic fluxes can also be made and absolute stereochemistry of some reactions can be determined. This technique with appropriate modifications is of obvious value for on-line analyses of industrial fermentation processes.
