BioGuard - Protecting National Economic Crops via Application of Beneficial Microorganisms to Bio-Control Plant and Human Pathogens in Organic Agriculture– BioGuard

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Organic (biodynamic) agriculture in Egypt faces increasing problems with phytopathogens (Ralstonia solanacearum, nematodes) and potential human pathogens (E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria). Practices in conventional agriculture that entails intensive growing of a limited number of crops in short rotations are one reason for the accumulation of these pathogens. Many national strategies plan to reduce the use of soil disinfectants, in order not to aggravate the situation and to eliminate their destructive effects on the environment and related health hazards. A possible, environmentally friendly and sustainable solution is the introduction of biological control agents (BCAs) or/and new crops rotations. BCAs are naturally occurring microorganisms, which are able to effectively colonize plants and promote their growth and health by various mechanisms. The general objectives of the project are focused on fundamental procedures in the application of bio-control agents and natural products, as well as the identification of effective indigenous beneficials which exhibit a more potent activity and are suitable for Egyptian conditions (regarding soil type, drought, and pathogen species).
