Binder - Wet Fuel Combustion - Wet Fuel Combustion - CFD-based development of a new low-emission biomass grate combustion technology for wet fuels

Project: Research project

Description

The utilisation of biomass fuels in medium-scale grate-fired combustion plants (1 to 15 MWth) has increased in the last decade. This makes it increasingly difficult to provide adequate amounts of commonly used biomass fuel assortments with moisture contents of 20 to 50 wt% w.b. at economically justifiable prices. The primary objective of the project is the development of a low-emission biomass grate-combustion technology for very wet fuels such as freshly harvested fast-growing wood fuels, freshly harvested wood chips and wet sawmill by-products (moisture content up to 65 wt% w.b.), which can be frozen in the worst case during winter time.
The project includes the technology development, the CFD-based design and construction of a pilot plant, the stepwise optimisation of the technology by extensive test runs, measurements and analysis as well as process control development based on innovative sensors for fuel moisture content determination as well as CO-/Lambda-sensors.
