The specific target of research activities in this project area is the development of aligned combustion and exhaust aftertreatment concepts for long-term large Diesel engine emission compliance. The goal is to increase engine efficiency and the corresponding reduction of CO2-emissions. This target should be attained in view of the long-term stringent future emission limits. In this project exhaust aftertreatment is regarded as the crucial mean for emission compliance for achieving the ambitious goals. The advanced combustion concepts for large Diesel engines will be developed base on this essential boundary. Research will focus on the application of the most modern engine technologies with the highest flexibility, as well as on the joint action between the combustion concept and the aftertreatment system. The projects experimental research will be conducted on a single-cylinder research engine and will be supported by extensive use of simulation methodology based on zero-, one-, and three-dimensional methods.
