AM Tool - Wire based Additive Manufacturing of tool components

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes offer interesting alternatives and enable a near net shape production. In this project, special focus will be put on wire based AM processes for forging tool repair applications and production of forging preforms. Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) under atmospheric conditions and electron beam welding (EBW) under vacuum will be used to produce defined geometries. Typical thermal cycles in AM for more complex structures will be determined and the correlation between welding parameters on thermal cycles and microstructure evolution, to predict corresponding metallurgical and mechanical properties, will be examined. Further, a concept for novel filler wires for Additive Manufacturing via CMT of tool components with increased toughness and deposition rates will be elaborated and realized.
