Importance of the Microstructure to the Mechanical Properties of Healthy and Aneurysmatic Abdominal Aortas

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk at conference or symposiumScience to science

Description

Tissue samples from healthy human abdominal aortas (AA) and AAAs are systematically analyzed and compared with respect to their mechanical and structural differences. Samples from the intact AA wall, their individual layers and the AAA wall are mechanically investigated using biaxial extension tests. The microstructure of collagen of AAs and AAAs is examined via deep tissue imaging using second-harmonic generation imaging on optically cleared tissues. A bivariate von Mises distribution is used to represent the continuous fiber dispersion throughout the entire thickness of the walls, and to provide two independent dispersion parameters to be used in a recently proposed non-symmetric fiber dispersion material model [1].
