Description

The highly flexible pumped storage plant Obervermuntwerk II in Vorarlberg is currently in the commissioning phase and is expected to be fully operational by 2018. For the hydraulic design of the upstream surge tank Krespa, transient 1D numerical simulations of the water castle oscillation were made by the Vorarlberger Illwerke and later also the TU Graz. Based on this, transient physical model experiments were carried out at the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management at Graz University of Technology. The dimensioning of the surge tank, in particular the design of the shaft head and the throttle are based on the results of the hybrid modeling. After completion of the structure, the comparison between model and prototype will now be made by evaluating the results of the installed measuring systems.
