Importance of the Microstructure to the Mechanical Properties of Healthy and Aneurysmatic Abdominal Aortas

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a dilatation of the abdominal aorta due to segmental weakening of the aortic wall. AAAs usually cause no symptoms and without medical treatment AAAs may grow until rupture, where the event of rupture is associated with a high mortality rate of 85%. Aortic walls can be viewed as a composite material of families of collagen fibers embedded in a ground matrix. Changes in the structural components of aortic walls such as the ground matrix and the collagen fibers have been shown to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of AAAs. Hence, there is a need to develop a deeper understanding of the microstructure and the related mechanics of aortic walls.
