Ventilation and safety concept of the emergency stop station ant the cross passages of the 33 km long Koralm rail tunnel

Abstract

The approximately 33 km long Koralm tunnel is equipped with a mechanical ventilation system. During an incident, for example a fire on a train, the train exits the tunnel if possible. Otherwise, the conductor stops the train at an emergency stop station in the middle of the tunnel where the passengers leave the train and proceed to an emergency area that is kept free of smoke by a pressure ventilation system. The mechanical ventilation system also protects the tube unaffected by the fire from smoke entering from the tube in which the incident occurred. In standard operation, climatic conditions (temperature, humidity) for a safe and undisrupted operation of the tunnel system must be maintained in the cross passages. The air is exchanged so that removal of accumulated waste heat is guaranteed.
