Abstract

This work corellates the fine structure, surface properties with the adsorption behaviour of new lyocell fibres. The fine structure was investigated by conventional methods and compared with those of viscose, modal and differently pre-treated cotton. The adsorption properties of all kinds of fibres were studied by water adsorption (vapour adsorption, water retention, swelling of fibres). As the interacton properties are strongly influenced by the electric charges on the surface, the streaming potential was measured and from these values the zeta potential was calculated as a function of the pH. Our results clearly dermonstrate that the adsorption properties of fibre forming polymers are determined by the amphorous regions, the size and the organisation of voids and the interaction properties on the surface. The influence of crystalline regions, their size and orientation on the adsorption character is less important.
