Surge Tank Design for Storage-Tunnels

Abstract

Water conveyance tunnels may be used to provide additional storage volume to hydro power plants by utilizing these as storage tunnels. To allow flexible and safe operation a special storage-tunnel surge tank design is proposed to allow both an operation for pressurized and free surface flow regimes. The storage-tunnel surge tank utilizes a low positioned and slightly inclined lower chamber additionally providing a high oscillation stability criterion.
