Reactions of a methanolic soln. contg. M(NO3)2·nH2O and bis(2-(H-pyrazol-1-yl)ethyl)amine (bepza) with NH4NCS afforded two series of complexes: the mononuclear dithiocyanato [M(bepza)(NCS)2] (1: M = Mn2+, 2: M = Zn2+, 3: M = Cu2+, 5: M = Ni2+) and the dinuclear bridged-thiocyano [M2(bepza)2(μ1,3-NCS)2(NCS)2] (6: M = Cd2+, 7: M = Co2+). The compds. which proved to be non-electrolytes were characterized by IR and UV-visible spectroscopy and the mol. structures of the compds. 1-3, 6 and 7 were detd. by single-crystal x-ray crystallog. In the former series, the five-coordinate distorted square pyramidal or trigonal bipyramidal geometry was achieved by the three N-donors of the ligand bepza and two N atoms of the terminal thiocyanato ligands, whereas in the dinuclear series, distorted octahedral geometry around each metal ion was achieved via the three N-donors of bepza, one N atom of a terminal thiocyanato ligand and a doubly bridged μ1,3-NCS.
