Abstract

In this study twenty-five gas atomized Al 99.5% powders of nine producers with particle size below 10 μm were hot extruded. Used powders represent the finest Al powder fractions offered on the market, available in quantities acceptable for industrial use. The effect of powder particle size, particle surface area, oxygen content and atomization atmosphere on the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded profiles was studied by means of BET, oxygen measurement, SEM, EBSD and tensile tests. The individual strengthening mechanisms operating in the microstructure and its effect on thermal stability of extruded profiles are described.
