Abstract

In December 2002 a large rockfall with a mass of approximately 5000 m3 occurred at the B99 Katschbergstraße. Due to the rockfall also the Tauernautobahn, located closely behind the top of the slope, was endangered. In this paper the geological-geotechnical setting and the causes for the rockfall are discussed. Based on field investigations a concept for the reinforcement of the slope, including instable areas north of the rockfall, was developed. The steps carried out over a length of about 300 m along the road, e.g. anchored concrete beams, nailed shotcrete shells and rockfall drapes, are described.
