Abstract

Business environments are currently characterized by volatility, uncertainty and a high pace of change. The digital transformation is offering opportunities for manufacturing companies to face these challenges and, at the same time, increasing their productivity. In particular, SMEs have problems in exploiting the potentials of digitalization due to the lack of qualified personnel and time as well as monetary resources. Moreover, studies show that these companies have a significantly lower level of shopfloor digitalization compared to larger companies and majorly do not have a digitalization expert or a digitalization department. Literature also suggests that there is a difference in training requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and larger companies while trainings are mainly focus on the requirements of larger companies. While general trainings are suitable for larger companies, there is a need for individualized, modular trainings for SMEs. The aim of this study is to 1) show and discuss training requirements of SMEs to promote the digital transformation; 2) introduce the development of the procedure model; and 3) explain the proposed procedure model.
