N2 - This paper deals with the optimal design of a disk type clutch used to apply a continuously adjustable torque. Instead of using friction clutches, the application of an electromagnetic particle clutch is discussed. The magnitude of the torque can be regulated by the application of an appropriate magnetic field which is simulated by FEM. Using an Evolutionary Strategy, a stochastic optimization method, a design yielding a prescribed torque subject to geometric constraints is developed.
