Multifunctional Climate Responsive Street Gardens: systematic retrofitting of existing city streets to meet the demands of climatic change

Abstract

The reintroduction of green infrastructure is a recognized approach to mitigate heat islands and flash floods in urban areas. Depending on the type and size green infrastructure can reduce urban temperatures by 1-2 degrees and at the same time reduce the risk of flooding in "watertight" areas. Based on an exploratory analysis to identify the hotspots in urban space, the green infrastructure is designed as multifunctional, climate-responsive street gardens. The analysis includes: sensor-based data acquisition such as temperature and humidity measurements, GIS-based decision data, modelling of flood risk as well as aspects of social cohesion, mobility, traffic and urban planning. It is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary concept that both positively influences the urban microclimate and conveys a message about the current climate emergency. It is a small and flexible retrofit measure, especially for urban centres, which creates more space for greenery and water and designs the street at eye level for people. The potentially destructive force is thus transformed into a source of gentle landscaping (living infrastructure) that promotes the acceptance and comfort of public urban spaces.
