Abstract

Different methods that enable the quantification of the mucoadhesive properties of polymers and/or pharmaceutical dosage forms have been proposed over the years. These methods are mainly based on two types of measurements, of either mechanical forces or particle interactions. Considering mechanical force methods, the force needed to break an adhesive bond is recorded and the mucoadhesive strength extrapolated. A modified balance/surface tensiometer method was used to investigate the mucosa-adhesive properties of water-soluble polymers used in pharmaceutical applications.
