Abstract

The joining of thick walled copper components by electron beam welding (EBW) faces some difficulties concerning the integrity of the welds and
also produces characteristic welding defects like spiking and root suck back [1]. At the Institute of Materials Science and Welding, an approach
by inserting filler material in form of CuSn sheets was investigated to address these issues [2]. Thereby, the alloy in the weld zone has a higher
melt viscosity and also a solidification interval which stabilizes the weld pool. More recently, the innovative process atmospheric plasma spraying
(APS) was utilized to apply a pure tin powder layer onto the weld face, which serves as filler metal [3]. Now the properties of welds with different
thicknesses of plasma-sprayed layers were investigated. Apart from the ultimate tensile strength, the influence on electric conductivity is of interest,
since copper components such as the present are applied in high power electric setups.
