    Abstract

Truck platooning is increasingly seen as the first commercial C ITS use case to be deployed at least at a low automation level (SAE Level 1 2). Benefits like fuel consumption reduction, efficiency improvements and safety increases are promising. However , NRAs concerns whether or not exact lateral trac k following will lead to increased pavement rutting need investigation . As research on the correlation of lateral track off set, air drag benefits and pavement rutting for the platooning use case is rather limited this study sets out to analyse counter effects. Cooperative forms of connected truck platooning somehow hold the promise of ITS: The Game Changer effective cooperation between platoons and infrastructure operators allowing for demand driven traffic management. A ctual expected effects on pavement rut ting and the lifecycle are assessed to provide NRAs with data sets and methodology templates for adequately adapting strategies for traffic management and pavement management
