Projekt: Foschungsprojekt

Image processing and optical 3D metrology are key technologies in quality inspection of industrial commodities. Within the past 30 years, a new branch of industry emerged, specialized on building custom-made measurement systems for automotive suppliers, electronic component manufacturers and consumer goods. The complexity of goods and the continuous modifications of describing geometric models leads to insufficient profitability of the custom-made systems. Therefore, the demand for a universal all-in-one system which is capable of handling a variety of 3D metrology tasks and which is still operable grows.
Microsense is focused on optical micro metrology, where the number of measurable quality features is extremely high ranging from 3D geometry over surface inspection to inspection of transparent objects. Innovations in projecting and camera technologies permit the assembly of several cameras and projectors in a single measurement sensor which is still light enough to be carried by robots and therefore measurements at different positions are possible.
The project's innovation focuses on the intelligent use and combination of an amount of cameras and projectors within a single sensor. This sensor allows solving a variety of possible measurement tasks which usually require several expensive sensors. But, the planning of new tasks might be even more complicate. A plug and play measurement system is desirable which can efficiently be applied and therefore must be capable of optimizing complex acquisition situations autonomously.
This system concept demands great skill in solving the evolving challenges such as system calibration, optimizing complex lighting situations, object recognition and user guidance which is investigated within the project Microsense.

Research on this project is done in cooperation with Alicona Imaging GmbH and the project won an award within the FIT-IT Visual Computing program.
