Cellulose based materials are frequently used in the packaging industry and as hygienic products. The main goal of these investigations is the qualitative and quantitative characterization of chemical compounds which can potentially migrate e.g. either from the packaging material into packed foodstuff or from hygienic articles onto human skin. Migrating components can substantially influence the quality of such products with respect to toxicity, odour or colour. Due to the physical nature of the constituents lipophilic extracts which yield mainly substances that can pass into fat containing food and gas phase extracts which show volatile substances that can transit via gas phase need to be investigated. Systematic migration studies are performed with "Tenax-GC" as simulated model-foodstuff. The chemical analysis is accomplished with static or dynamic headspace techniques and chromatographic separation methodology, mainly gas chromatography with flame ionization-, electron capture- and mass spectrometric detection, as well as high performance liquid chromatography with UV - VIS detection.
