The project aims to increase the accuracy of simulation results regarding soot and NOx emissions from diesel engines. This will be achieved through experimental validation and further development of simulation models for evaporation, spray formation, combustion and pollutant formation. In this context a method for the definition of surrogate fuels will be used in two different experimental test beds. In an optical accessible combustion chamber the use of shadowgraphy, OH chemiluminescence, two-color pyrometry as well as laser light extinction and laser induced incandescence is planned to measure spray geometry, spray penetration, combustion and pollutant formation. In a later stage, also laser induced fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy will be applied. A second testbed will incorporate a 2,4liter five-cylinder Volvo diesel engine (I5D). The resulting measurement data regarding spray formation, combustion and pollutant formation will be used for validation and further development of the simulation models.
