Beschreibung

The design workshop “Exterior Spaces of the
City“ (Aussenräume der Stadt) is dedicated
to the exterior spaces of the city, such as gardens,
parks, cemeteries, and settlements. These
spaces, which the mapping method “Rotblauplan“
presents as “open,” “blue fields“
immersed in the urban realm, are herein understood
as places with the unexploited potential
of a future, sustainable concept of the
city. The workshop focuses on the moment in
which more defined spaces diverge from less
spatially defined situations and appear here
as exterior spaces with the nature of an open
field; they are dedicated to the periphery.
Based on the assumption that the potential
of the exterior character of such peripheric
spaces must be transformed, this workshop
is dedicated to four relevant sites. We assume
that, regarding cities’ future architectonical
developments, the relationship between
interior and exterior – between one sphere
and another – can be the basis for the transformative
quality of the typologies of exterior
spaces.
The image of Pasolini playing football on the
periphery of Rome shows that such spaces
can create a contrasting atmosphere in which
urban life can be freely disposed. The landscape
of the periphery, especially in the case
of Rome, stands for both the transformative
history of a place and the city’s already-developed
spatial nature.
If this image represents the characteristics of
post-war urban expansion, it is important to
ask to what extent such models are valid for
today’s demands, especially regarding the
exteriority of community and public spaces.
The open character of these exterior spaces
contrasts with the sometimes very dense character
of the settlements. The workshop explores
this ambiguous possibility.

In this context, it is essential to consider spatially
defined places in relation to the future
development of post-war settlements in European
cities. The promised qualities of exterior
spaces that were supposed to be open green
fields, but this proposal may no longer be feasible.
In his short 1913 essay “Philosophie der Landschaft,“
Georg Simmel states that spaces are
defined both by social actions and by boundary
questions. Accordingly, this workshop,
which takes place in September 2022, aims
to investigate the peripheric spatial qualities
of exteriority. The starting point of a broader
reflection concerns the extent to which the relationship
between enclosed and open spaces
must be negotiated with respect to the transformation
of post-war settlements on urban
peripheries.
Four international teams from Politecnico di
Bari, TU Graz, Università Svizzera Italiana,
and RWTH Aachen are invited to address the
topic of post-war housing settlements in Aachen.
Four sites, each with a different spatial
model, have been chosen.
The aim of the workshop is to develop an
intervention based on a spatial-analytical
approach regarding the exteriority of these
places and to create an architectonical intervention.
The results will be presented and
exhibited on September 8th and will be accompanied
by a roundtable discussion on the
future transformation of such peripheric places
in the case of Aachen.
